Hi there! I homeschool my two girls and for history this school year we're studying the ancients; so with that I typed in "the hanging gardens" in google and stumbled across your website. Hi Richard I have spent my day off googling living in Sierra compound Jeddah, as my husband has a job to start in March. So to my surprise and totally by accident I stumbled on your website. I have spent the whole afternoon absorbing " your Life". It has been a real inspiration and has put some of my fears of the unknown to ease. We are the opposite to you we live in Tintwistle, Derbyshire and we have brought a family of six children up in the place we were born and grew up in. When this job opportunity arose, although quite exciting it is scary too, we both have good jobs nice cars and a lovely country cottage.....Its a big step. The passports are in the post and the first trip planned for 2nd Feb. Can I just say thank you for sharing your life experience in such a well thought out and visual log, when you were putting it together you would not have known the impact it would have. :-)

Hello, I greatly enjoyed reading your account of life in Baghdad in 1970s. I worked in Baghdad from 1981 to the end of 1983 and enjoyed the events in the British Club and Alwiyah Club. It's always the case when overseas that social life is better than when back in the UK, as we all tend to make that much more of an effort. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. Hi, just stumbled upon your page. I’m an architectural intern and was actually looking for a reference to the Madinat to show an interior designer sat next to the faux souk, but once I had done that I scrolled down. Your page has brought a smile to face on a dark winters night, in the office here just off regent street in London. As I look at some of the expressions on your children’s faces on your recent excursions and recognize me and my sister, and I think it wasn’t that long ago that my father lived in Dubai whilst I went to school in England and when he got the chance he would take (drag) us all over Scotland, Northumberland, southern England and so on and so on. I don’t think I appreciated it much at the time but now I realize after his death two years ago how many places I have been too, the cultures I experienced through visiting him as he worked all over the world and how much balance and depth it has brought to my character as a result. Places and experiences that are hard to come by for your average adolescent. The first time I visited Dubai was when I was about 12, we had moved from Jeddah in Saudi and I thought it was a great step forward. With each returning visit I watched the city grow, I’m 24 now and wrote my architectural dissertation on the urbanization of Dubai. I only write so much as I can see similarities in the lifestyle and philosophy you display here to the one my father had for me and my sister and my two older brothers - that incidentally now both live in Dubai, as well as bit of warm hearted procrastination. This is truly amazing what you have done to this site, two things made me really interested to read more. Are you decendants of The Wistar Ambler family of New York? I believe Tom Newsome's daughter married Mr. Wistar Ambler of New York prior to 1955. Mrs Wistar Ambler was listed in Tom's obit as a surviving Daughter. Mr. Tom Newsome is burried in the Pecan Grove cemetary in Mckinney Texas in the Newsom family plot. Mr. Tom Newsome had lived in Oakland, California prior to his death. Tom Newsome was the son of William butler Newsome, I believe, who came to Mckinney in 1875 or there abouts. Are you the family of Wistar Ambler of N.Y? I believe the daughter of Tom Newsome of Oakland California married Mr. Wistar Ambler. Just came across your site whilst researching "Brocket Babies". I see you stayed at Brocket Hall in 2005. Did you know that during WW2, they turned the house into a maternity hospital - mainly for mothers from London. The children born in these grand surroundings were known as Brocket Babies. Quite a select group. It was converted back to a house after the war. As it happens my father was born there in 1942, whilst his family were living in the grounds of Knebworth House. Very grand all round for a not-very-grand lad!

Amblers, You know how it is, you go to one website, and the link on it carries you to browse yet another. That's how I tripped across yours. I've lived in the UK for three and a half decades, but now am in Chicago, USA (it's a suburb of Glencoe, to the wise and initiated) for the last decade, more or less. I too travel much but few photographic collections stimulated me as much as yours did, and I compliment you very heartedly for the fascinating collection you assembled so skillfully and so tastefully. I also stumbled across your site due to searching for the hanging gardens, ironically it seems, as so many have before me as well. You have led a very blessed life and I hope that you and your family continue to do so for many many years to come. I am going to spend more time here looking and keep up with your life and travels through your site. Incredible, you have been to so many of the places I have only dreamt of thus far. I am so excited to know that there are people getting to do all the things I only dream of currently. I have only traveled all of the US so far, never having been off of the North American continent...yet. Hi, it is really interesting to see the club in which we spent our childhood in your site.My family joind the Ilwiya Club ,as it is called today,in 1982 when i was 12 years old,the club used to be a place for the best families in iraq and the level of people was also high.We spent lovely hours swimming, playing tennis and dating girls.etc.In fact, it has now three swimming pools and 11 tennis courts as well as a huge bar apart from the enourmous garden.The last time i 've been there was in 2004.I can send you photos if you want. I stumbled on your site after searching Jeddah images on Google. From there I've spent a very happy hour ambling haphazardly through the life and times of the Ambler Family. I've followed your professional career moves, watched Edward grow from a tot to a rugby player, Clair from a very fetching young woman to the beauty she is today. I feel like I've just spent a most enjoyable late evening with a couple I'd love to have known. My wife just wandered into the library and I introduced her to your site. The photography is superb and the accompanying text lucid and informative. I've spent my working life as a broadcast journalist, producer-director-writer and many of our travels cover the same ground. I'm 57 years old and have terminal cancer, so I am enjoying the last period of life the free time it affords me in the comfort of my home near Toronto, Canada. I've bookmarked your site so I can return another time and continue my tour. So, your statement "unlikely to be of interest to others" is manifestly wrong. Wow! This site is amazing! I was referred to this by a friend and the photography is also really nice. I used to live in Riyadh as well: Kingdom City compound. This is just the weirdest thing..My name is SSarah Murray nee BakerI am having a reunion for my year at Bedford High school for girls and I was doing a bit of research...Anyway saw this site inadvertantly. I lived at 20 Rothsay rd in Bedford with my four sisters and we all went to Bedford high School. I went out with Mike Bavington and my sister Mary, went out with Paul Bavington and I was also friends with Josh Galvin and others. We both used to babysit for your housemaster's children. Guess what , I saw both your housemaster and wife the other day in a pub in Bedford when I was visiting my mother. they recognised me immediately and we chatted for a while. Dear Ambler family, your pictures of Baghdad brought it all back. We've got just about the same snaps in our photo album! I've tried in vain to convince people what a nice place Iraq was before everything went wrong, and your photos will help. My brother and I were at ICC too, my sister was at Mansour school. We left to return to Sri Lanka just before you got there. I was in Mrs Al Rawi's class and then Mrs Amran's class. I can update you with some sad news - I was reading New Scientist a few years later, it must have been around 1980, and a leader carried the news that Dr Al Rawi, who I think was a senior nuclear scientist, had been shot by the regime. An excellent collection of pictures from the world over. i only have one objection i see a lot of beautiful pictures of England, Colorado but some of the pictures of Asia like that of Baghidad and Bombey Indie are more centered around show casing the poverty in those countries aren't there pictures showing brighter side of life there, i am sure we can find thousands of homeless and very poor people living in underpasses in London.So why only Asia put some of England, I think we all are inclined to capture bad images of the eastern world while only looking at the bright side of the west isn't it food for taught. Dear Ambler family Just a chance urge to revisit days in Baghdad (1970-74) where I was a child (schooling at Mrs. Bust's nursery school and then at ICC) led me to your website - first hit in Google. Your website is superbly put together! The pictures are great and bring back memories that will make me dig into old shoeboxes of pictures revisit our days out there. Do you have more pictures from ICC? I am sure that my two sisters and I may be in some of them - I recall going to one sports day dressed as Julius Caeser. I was in Mrs Darweesh's class and then in Mrs Al-Mashidani's. Mrs. Al-Rahwi had to take me home in her VW one St. Valentines Day when I slipped in the mud and broke my front tooth on a concrete drain cover in the playground. Hi! I would just like to thank you for the insight into so many places and cultures you have given to me in the last couple of hours! Like so many who have signed this guest book, I came across your site whilst researching on Google and became fascinated with your adventures - I have kept myself out of bed well into the morning just to read about them! I think it's wonderful that your children will try so many different things. Hi Ambler family. I think your site is excellent. I was trying to find the compound near Riyadh I lived at between the age of 4 and 8 (1985-1988). It was called Ballast Needham I believe. Hi Amblers, I'm from Saudi Arabia and I'm currently studying in the United States. I was searching for Saudi cuisines and somehow I ended up in here. I really liked the idea of documenting your life with photos and movies. I really feel disappointed for not having pictures from my old memories. I'm still 24 and have time to do it though :) I'm sorry to know that you didn't really haven't had a pleasant time at Saudi Arabia, but I'm really happy that you enjoyed the desert trips and you realized how friendly the people are. It sad to know that Saudi has become more restrict than it was in the 70s. However, I can tell you that Saudi Arabia is changing now and has changed alot since during the last seven years. Hello Amblers, and Happy Holiday! I haven't been through the whole site yet, but I have REALLY enjoyed traveling with you so far! And watching the kids get older! We are a family of five in Northern California who has never traveled much farther than the borders of our own USA. We'd love to travel the world, but alas, Mom (me) HATES to fly...really HATES to fly...and the vacation plans keep landing us in Disneyland! Someday we will go to: FIRST - ENGLAND!!! I want to go there very much! Then maybe France....for a day...maybe. (No offense to the French). Japan would really be great. It's interesting that these are some of the places you've been. Now as far as Chicago goes, that's were I was born. For me, it's a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there anymore. Enjoyed your comments about Riyadh. Just moved here a month ago. Particularily appreciated your comments about the inane beaurocracy as I've been experiencing it. But, being a Canadian woman, and a woman alone here without her husband (I am here as a teacher), I would add that it is only for men that 'all heavens open up' after you get your igama. They're very much concerned here that women's feet are planted firmly on the earth and preferably in her own home! Still it is an interesting experience. Dear Amblers. Thanks for this beautiful diary. I was a little kid when moving to Saudi / Tabuk in the 80's. As you do, my parents (German father / Vietnamese mother) gave me the pleasure to travel the whole world (Afrika, whole Europe, Asia, etc.) and back in Germany as a teen, I was first sad, but then proud and very confident. Especially the time in Saudi i miss a lot, the desert, the red sea, trips to jordan, our nissan patrol.... Hey guys came across your site whilst looking at pics of the good old days of being back at riyadh. God i was there back in 1992 - 1999. I went to the S.A.I.S School. and lived on Al faisalia compound from what i remember was near Eid the american compound, but im sure thats all changed now. God as i said before was just looking at the good old days seeing pictures of it all brings back so many memories like sarawat the food store and euromarche. WOW haha makes you really think about it all. Wish i could go back i would in a instant. The reason i and my family was there cause my father worked for BAE and was there for the gulf war so we came over after. But im back in the sunny united kingdom now south west a little town called Weston super mare. But love the site i didnt have time to check up on the other places as you have been to so many but to be honest as well i just wanted to relive those dreams of riyadh. This is like looking at my own life. I went to school at Jeddah Prep and lived there in addition to Riyadh and Dhahran. I've lived and had holidays in all the countries you list as well. My first foray into travel was being raised in Kenya (Mombasa/Nairobi) then Beirut in the good times. Been inside Cheops pyramid at Giza, Raffles in Singapore, Penang, used to live in Hong Kong, been to all of French Polynesia, Cooks etc etc ad-nauseam! -I rarely come across people as well-travelled & culturally astute. I have had a great evening looking at your photos from all over the world. I worked and lived in Riyadh for 2 years in 1988. I was fascinated at the compound you lived in........what superb facilities. I stayed in a private villa with a shared pool when I worked in the Riyadh Dental Center. I was allowed to visit Baghdad in 1976 on a VISA obtained through the French Embassy who had an American working in the American Interests Section. I am trying to remember who that on loan State Department official was. Hunter A. Poole, Sr. Former Chief of International Section of NC Dept. of Commerce

Reply from Richard:  The senior American Diplomat in Baghdad when we were there (1973-5) was Arthur L. Lowrie - although he certainly would have had other American Staff working in Baghdad at the time.

Greetings from Switzerland! Just by accident I dropped in your wonderful website. It's really great! I also lived 3 years in Riyadh during my posting at the Swiss Embassy in the Diplomatic Quarter. You certainly know it. It was a great time - but now I realize also, Riyadh changend enormously! I lived for 17 years abroad - in many different countries so I know that there are also many difficulties to manage - especially with family. But it's worth whyle! To answer your question I subscribed to www.anythingemail.com

For about $50 per year and they gave me my email addresses where I chose my own domain name (@theamblerfamily.com) and 5Mb of free web space. I didn’t expect to use the web site at first but the offer comes with some free web publishing software which you can download and which I played with late one night whilst suffering from my usual jet lag. It’s a bit clunky but is no harder to use than any other software. It comes with templates and is moderately flexible – certainly good enough for publishing a few photos and a bit of text. However the 5Mb soon ran out and I found the software a bit restricting. I bought more web space from the same company, but this time I pay about $10 per month for the email and web site. I then bought Microsoft Front Page web publishing software. This is a bit like using MS Word or PowerPoint and easy enough for simple stuff and offers more flexibility.

Anythingemail.com has been prompt and helpful in replying to technical questions and issues.

Richard, Howdy from Orinda, California. This is just outside of the San Francisco Bay Area, 'bout 20 miniutes to the City. I appreciate your site. I am digital artist and right now we are producing a whole lot of images and animations for a project in Nakheel, SA. I was googling for Street lamps as we are building a 3d representation of a small (big) city. I quickly purused through your site and got the idea that I better landscape it up as much as possible. Hi Richard and family! You don't know me, but I was seeking out photos, etc about living in Riyadh as my family will be moving there shortly. Like you, we have travelled around that area of the world a bit, with a few years spent in Kuwait. We just returned last September from living for a year in England, which we quite enjoyed (except the high cost of what we Canadians would consider substandard housing!). I love the timeline idea and your photos are fabulous. You have really captured a lot of things that are interesting to world travellers.
